Just yesterday, I was at a conference for bloggers where I learned that each “tweet” you post on Twitter gets its own separate URL. As you can imagine, that is a lot of URLs. Twitter can be one tool in your repertoire that you use to make sure that your website gets noticed and that customers keep coming back for more.
If you missed Monday’s post about the usefulness of Twitter, here is brief recap:
Twitter is a micro-blogging application that lets you post very short posts (no more than 140 characters). Other people can sign up to follow your tweets and keep up with what you are doing. Twitter is a way to increase SEO, just as blogging is. And you do not have to Twitter continually on a daily basis. You can pick certain times to Twitter or even Twitter to give updates from certain events like an industry conference.
At the end of this past summer, Twitter decided to hire someone who will be dedicated full-time to making sure that people are not using Twitter as a way to bombard others with spam e-mail tweets.
But even before that people found ways to try and use Twitter in ways that the company’s founders had not intended. If you have signed up for Twitter, then Twitter included no follow to the Web entry that is a part of your profile. However, some people found a way around this so they could slip some links in without Twitter noticing.
Interestingly enough, it was someone from Google who brought the loophole to Twitter’s attention. As we mentioned before, Google is serious about SEO and organic placement. Google is active in finding those who try to get better rankings using fraudulent methods. To paraphrase one blogger–you have to wonder about a business that relies on these kinds of methods to increase their chances with search engines.
There are no shortcuts to great SEO and organic search placement. Even sneaky techniques like trying to outwit Twitter will only get you so far.
